A Harmony Homecoming: Resident Story

|

Harmony at Bellevue senior living community resident Kenneth “Don” McNeil truly proves there is no place like home. From riding horses when he was a boy to now cozying up with his lap cat, Bellevue has always been the place for the 92-year-old Tennessean.

Don and his wife Dot, recently moved into Independent Living at Harmony at Bellevue, a homecoming for the Tennessee native.

When Don was 8 years old, growing up in Bellevue, he used to ride his horse all around the town. He even used to play on the same land where the Harmony at Bellevue building now stands. “I used to play with a friend who lived at the barn where we are now,” Don said.

Don had an array of pleasant pastimes growing up in Bellevue.

“I liked swimming and fishing in the Hartford River. I also liked riding my bike on old Harding Road when I was small,” Don said with a nostalgic smile. “I’m really at home here.”

Don has resided in Bellevue for most of his life. For 50 years, Don and Dot lived in a home only three miles from the Harmony senior living community, so his move into Harmony at Bellevue just felt right.

“It’s a really nice place, we enjoy it,” Don said. “We got to the point where we couldn't manage our home, and we had about four acres of land, and it was a lot of work for us to keep up with. So, Dorothy (Dot) found this place, and it's a very nice place.”

At 92 years young, Don can enjoy all of the amenities Harmony has to offer. One of his favorite parts of his new home is the farm truck that arrives every Thursday to bring the residents fresh fruits and vegetables. He also enjoys spending time with his cat, Amy, who lives in the residency with the couple.

Don’s connection and legacy in Bellevue continue to thrive through his grandson. Before moving into Harmony, Don and Dot passed down the home that had served them well for 50 years to their grandson.

“My grandson graduated from medical school,” Don said, beaming with pride. “So, he bought our house, and we got to stay close to him.”

As the years have gone by, Don has been able to see how his rural town has grown and developed into what it is today.

“There wasn't hardly anything out here, maybe, maybe 15 or 20 houses. That was all that was in this area,” Don said. “It’s amazing to see now.”
